On Sunday, April 21 Dave and Andy’s Homemade Ice Cream announced that it would be closing.

“After 40 amazing years of serving Pittsburgh our ice cream, Andy has decided to retire,” the shop explained in a Facebook post. In the comments of that post, there has been an outpouring of love and support.

“Oakland just won’t be the same,” said one commenter.

Another begged Andy to reconsider: “Nooooo!!!!! Please think about selling!!! Oakland needs it!!!”

In the days since the announcement, customers have flocked to Oakland for one last scoop from Dave and Andy’s. Every day, there has been a long line from opening until close, or until supplies run out.

On Friday, The Tartan went to the scene to try and get their own scoop. The line stretched out the door, and all the way down the block. Customers stood chatting as the line slowly worked its way towards the door, and many had to leave before they made it halfway down the block.

Unfortunately, The Tartan reporters had class at 3 p.m. and had to join the ranks of those getting out of line before they could get their ice cream.

When asked how long he had waited, one customer all the way up at the front of the line said he had waited about two hours.

Dave and Andy’s Homemade Ice Cream closed its doors for the last time on Sunday, April 28.
